Is a Tummy Tuck Right for Me? | Kansas City, KS

If you’ve had children, or recently lost weight, you may notice a sagging in the tummy region. Or, you may wish to remove excess abdominal fat that is resistant to your efforts at dieting and exercise. With today’s cosmetic procedures, you have options for any challenge you may be facing. We can help you determine the right course of action, one that will best suit your lifestyle and help you reach your goals.

What is a Tummy Tuck?

tummy tuck kansas city, ksAn abdominoplasty, commonly referred to as a “tummy tuck,” is a procedure that creates a firmer, flatter tummy area by removing excess fat and skin and tightening the supporting abdominal muscles. There are several versions of the procedure, each designed to address specific concerns. What a tummy tuck is not is a one-size-fits-all procedure or a substitute for exercise and diet for weight loss.

Am I a Good Candidate for a Tummy Tuck?

If you are a non-smoker,  are able to retain a good level of fitness, without significant weight gain or loss, and are generally in good health, you may be a good candidate for a tummy tuck. Other considerations include your goals. If you have not been able to lose a stubborn “pouch” after weight loss or childbearing, a tummy tuck may be the right option.

What are the Alternatives?

In some cases, a tummy tuck is not the right choice. If you’ve lost weight through diet and exercise and are maintaining a healthy fitness level, yet have excess fat in the abdominal area that is resistant to your fitness efforts, a tummy tuck may seem like the logical solution. In some cases, however, a tummy tuck is not the appropriate procedure. If the excess skin present is minimal, you may wish to consider liposuction instead. Call us today at (913) 451-3722 for a consultation, to talk about your options and which procedure is right for you.

Facial Cosmetic Surgery Options | Kansas City, KS

When it comes to facial cosmetic surgery, there are as many options as there are problems to be corrected and facial features to be enhanced. Here is a list of some of the most common procedures and what can be corrected.

Blepharoplasty

As we age, the eyelids can sag, a condition which may even interfere with sight. A blepharoplasty corrects sagging and tightens the skin, resulting in a more uplifted, youthful look and better vision. It is a relatively simple outpatient procedure.

Forehead and Face Lifts

A facelift may be a targeted procedure- as with a forehead lift or be an overall tightening and repositioning of the skin, a procedure which corrects sagging and reduces the look of lines and wrinkles for a smoother, more youthful visage.

Mentoplasty

Mentoplasty helps correct a double chin. It may also be used to correct other issues with the facial profile. It may be considered inFacial Cosmetic Surgery conjunction with a rhinoplasty, in order to achieve balance of the facial proportions and features.

Rhinoplasty

Commonly known as a “nose job,” a rhinoplasty may be performed to correct a number of issues, including the size of the nose in proportion to the face and to adjust the shape of the nose to better suit the face.

Skin Resurfacing

Through either laser or chemical treatments, skin resurfacing can reduce the look of fine lines and wrinkles, and provide a rejuvenated glow. Many treatments stimulate the body’s own natural healing processes to provide additional collagen and refresh cell growth.

Botox Injections

Botox can help reduce wrinkles and lines as well as plump specifically targeted areas. The injections are most often used to reduce the look of crows feet and other fine lines around the lips, nose, and eyes.

Facial Reconstruction and Scar Reduction

In some cases, facial reconstruction and scar revision may be necessary following an accident or previous surgery. Depending on your goals and specific situation, your doctor may be able to reduce or eliminate the look of scars and other injuries.

Breast Lift vs. Augmentation | How to choose

There are a number of corrective options available to women who aren’t happy with the size or shape of their breasts. A breast lift repositions the nipple and corrects sagging that might be a result of aging or childbearing. An implant increases the size of the breast and changes it to a rounder, fuller shape. Both procedures may be performed at the same time to achieve the optimum result. Each woman’s body is different, and it’s important to discuss your goals with your doctor to decide which procedure is best for you.

Breast Lift

Breast Beach Rast A breast lift involves moving the nipple up on the breast and removing excess tissue. It may result in significant scarring, though this is hidden as much as possible beneath the folds of the breast. Your doctor can provide you with before and after photos to give you an idea of what your outcome may be like. For women with significant sagging, a breast lift may be the best option to improve the profile and their overall confidence in their look.

Breast Augmentation

Implants are designed to enhance the size and shape of the breast. A woman may choose implants to correct asymmetrical breasts or to enhance small breasts to improve her profile. A breast augmentation involves implanting silicone or saline-filled sacs into the chest, usually just behind or in front of the muscle, depending upon the desires of the patient and the judgment of the surgeon. The nipple and breast tissue are moved to an ideal position with an augmentation as well as with a lift.

Dual Procedure

In some cases, both procedures may be performed at the same time. The breasts may be lifted to correct sagging, and an augmentation may be performed to create a more youthful, perkier profile. Depending upon your goals for the surgery and your surgeon’s opinion of the best way to achieve the results you desire, both procedures may be done at the same time. Discuss your options with your surgeon when you make an appointment with Dr. Rast.

Male Breast Reduction | Kansas City, Kansas

Male breast reduction, also known as gynecomastia surgery, reduces the profile of male breasts, and returns the chest to a more pleasing contour. In severe cases, gynecomastia may cause sagging and even stretching of the areola. The areola can be repositioned, and excess skin removed, during corrective surgery. Most men report a significant increase in confidence and comfort following the surgery.

What Causes Gynecomastia?

All of the causes of gynecomastia- the condition of enlarged male breasts, are not fully understood. It is estimated that up to 50% of men in America will suffer from the condition in their lifetimes. It can happen at any age. Most men opt to have the condition treated in their teens to adulthood.Male Breast Reduction Rast

Certain medications, weight gain, hormone imbalances, and genetics may all play a part in gynecomastia. In some men, hormonal imbalance causes expansion of glandular tissue, resulting in even slim men to notice enlargement. Regardless of the cause, male breast reduction surgery is the most efficient treatment, and the only one that consistently shows permanent results.

Is Liposuction an Option?

Liposuction may be a treatment option for gynecomastia in some cases. The treatment approach will depend upon the extent of the condition, patient preference, and the doctor’s advice. In moderate to severe cases, surgical tissue excision is necessary, not only to reduce the fat and glandular tissue, but to adjust the position of the areola and to remove excess skin. Each case is different and treatment must be tailored to suit the individual needs of the patient.

What To Expect – Male Breast Reduction

At your initial consultation, you’ll discuss the extent of your condition, your medical history, and the treatment options with your doctor. Once you’ve decided upon the best course of action, you’ll be asked to begin preparing for your male breast reduction. Preparation may include:

  • Changing or halting current medications
  • Smoking cessation
  • Avoiding aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs, and herbal supplements
  • Planning for recovery, including arranging transportation to and from your surgery appointment
  • Filling prescriptions for post-surgical medications

General or local anesthetic may be required, depending upon the extent of treatment and your individual treatment plan. Following your male breast reduction procedure, following the physician’s instructions is crucial to healing. You’ll need to avoid lifting or having anything brush up against the incisions for at least a few days. You may have a small plastic tube, called a drain, in place to reduce swelling following the procedure. Be sure to follow your doctor’s instructions for after-care and follow-up carefully.

What Are The Different Types of Breast Implants? | Kansas City, Kansas

One of the considerations when planning breast augmentation surgery is which type of implant will best suit your goals and lifestyle. Your surgeon can advise you on which type of implant is best for your situation, but it’s important to go into the conversation knowing what your options are.

Saline Breast Implants

Breast Implants Kansas City KS Saline implants are the best-known and were the commonly used implants before silicone became available. They are filled with a sterile saline solution. The primary advantage to saline implants is that, in case of rupture, the saline can be naturally absorbed by the body without ill effects. They are generally uniform in shape and firmness.

Structured Saline Implants

Structured saline implants contain the same sterile saline solution. An additional layer is added to the implant which helps create a more natural shape and feel. With either type of saline implant, a leak will be obvious as the breast will “deflate.” There will be no need for an MRI to detect a leak with saline.

Silicone Breast Implants

Silicone implants are filled with a silicone gel. The gel provides a more natural feel. In case of a rupture, the breast will not “deflate” as with saline. Regular MRIs or ultrasounds are necessary to assess the condition of the implant.

Gummy Bear Breast Implants

The “gummy bear” implant, as its name suggests, retains its shape even if the implant shell should become ruptured, because of the thickness of the silicone gel inside. The implant retains its shape more firmly than other types of implants, and requires a slightly longer incision to insert.

Round, Smooth, and Textured Breast Implants

Breast implant shells are another part of the consideration. Round implants are uniform in shape and therefore there is no concern about rotation after they are implanted. Smooth implants offer the softest feel and move naturally within the incision pocket for the most natural feel. Finally, textured breast implants reduce the risk of a tight scar capsule.

The type of implant that’s right for you is a decision best made with your doctor. Contact us today to arrange your consultation.

Breast Augmentation Preparation | Kansas City, Kansas

Once you’ve decided to have a breast augmentation, whether it’s for reconstruction after a surgery, to reverse the effects of pregnancy or aging, or simply to even out and improve what nature has given you, it’s important to be prepared for the surgery. A full recovery is dependent upon good preparation beforehand, so be sure to follow your surgeon’s instructions carefully.

Two Weeks Prior

Avoid taking aspirin and other blood-thinning medications. Be sure to speak with your doctor about any prescription medications you may be taking. Stop smoking. Avoid alcohol and any recreational drugs. If you don’t already have loose-fitting clothing, especially blouses that button down the front, this is a good time to pick up a few. Meet with your doctor to finalize the plan for the size of your implants, and to review the procedure.

Several Days BeforeBreast Augmentation Preparation

Fill all of your prescriptions, including any for pain management. Pick up light foods like fruit juice, tea, toast, crackers, bagels, and fruit. You’ll want to avoid heavy, greasy, or spicy foods for a while. Since pain medication can induce constipation, you may want to consider picking up some over-the-counter stool softener. Avoid harsh laxatives.

Confirm with your support person that they’ll be able to drive you home after your breast augmentation, and that you’ll have a responsible adult to stay with you in the 24 hours following the surgery.

The Evening Before

Shower with the special anti-bacterial soap recommended by your surgeon. Eat lightly and avoid foods that cause gas or bloating. Get a good night’s sleep, and carefully follow your surgeon’s instructions regarding fasting in the hours leading up to the surgery.

The Day of the Breast Augmentation

Do not eat or drink prior to your surgery. Avoid cigarettes and alcohol. Wash with the antibacterial soap as instructed by your surgeon. Do not put on any makeup, perfume, or deodorant. Arrive a little early for your appointment so that you can fill out any last-minute paperwork and take care of any other details.

With careful preparation, your breast augmentation should go smoothly and recovery will be easier.

Breast Augmentation Recovery | Kansas City, Kansas

Women seek out breast augmentation for a variety of reasons. Reconstruction after a mastectomy, or rejuvenating breasts that have begun to sag due to aging, or recovering the fullness after childbirth, are some commonly cited reasons. Whatever your reason for having reconstructive or breast augmentation surgery, there are some important considerations when it comes to recovery.

Breast Augmentation Procedure

The procedure itself takes about an average of 2 hours under general anesthesia. Breast AugmentationYour surgeon will make the incision under the breast, under the arm, or near the nipple depending upon the surgical plan. The implant is then placed either under or above the chest muscle.

Recovery

The recovery time will depend, in part, upon the type and size of augmentation that is performed. Whichever type of surgery you undergo, you’ll go from surgery into a recover room to be monitored while the anesthesia wears off.

Once you’re fully awake, you’ll be released. Be sure to have someone available to drive you home. If you have small children, you’ll need to have someone else to be responsible for their care for at least a few weeks, since you won’t be able to lift anything for up to six weeks, and will need to get plenty of rest in the days following your procedure.

At Home

You’ll probably have some pain and swelling over the first few days. You’ll need to wear a supportive garment or band, and you may have drainage tubes which will be removed after a few days. The gauze covering your incisions will need to be replaced regularly to aid in healing and prevent infection. Your doctor will prescribe pain relieving medication for at least the first few days. Be sure to take it as scheduled for maximum relief.

Following Up

Depending upon the type of breast implant you and your doctor choose, you may need to be monitored in the years after your implant, to ensure that your implants have not worn out or ruptured. Breast implants need to be replaced about every 10 years, or if you experience changes in your size or shape over time.

You should be able to return to normal activity in about 8 weeks. Scars will continue to fade for up to a year.

Breast Augmentation – Kansas City, Kansas

There are important factors to consider when deciding upon a breast augmentation surgery, also known as an augmentation mammoplasty. Your health, reasons for desiring an augmentation, and lifestyle are all factors in deciding whether a “boob job” is right for you. Never allow another person to talk you into having life altering surgery. This should be a decision based on your desire for a fuller profile, not on the expectations of anyone else.

Physical Healthbreast augmentation kansas city kansas

Like any surgery, breast augmentation puts a strain on your body. The immune system works to fight off any potential infection, and your body must undergo the work off healing after the surgery. Therefore, it’s important that you’re in good physical condition before undergoing the procedure. Your surgeon will discuss your medical history with you, including important factors like whether you’re a smoker, and whether your current weight is stable.

Emotional Health

Your medical team will work with you to ensure you understand the potential and limitations of your augmentation surgery. Patients who undergo the surgery with realistic expectations are far more likely to be satisfied with the outcome. Being properly motivated for the surgery will help you follow the surgeon’s directions post-op.

Patient Goals

Once you know what to expect and decide upon the goals you wish to meet with your surgery, it’s time to schedule a consultation. During the consultation, the surgeon can determine if you’re a good candidate for the procedure, and you can have your questions answered. Be sure to talk to your surgeon about your lifestyle and activity levels, as they will affect the potential options for your surgery. Over 90% of breast augmentation patients are satisfied with their surgery a year later. Careful preparation contributes to your happiness with the outcome of your procedure.

Breast Augmentation Recovery Time

The breast augmentation recovery time will vary for each patient and depends upon several factors. Whether the implant is placed sub glandular- above the underlying chest muscles, or sub muscular- behind the pectoral muscle, will greatly affect the recovery time.

The Day of Surgery

On the day of your surgery, be sure to arrive early and confirm that you have someone available to take you 29416335 - a midsection of a doctor examining breasthome. You’ll remain in a recovery room for up to several hours after you come out of the anesthesia. A doctor will come in and clear you for release.

It’s important that you continue to follow post-surgical instructions carefully while at home. You’ll need to lie on your back to rest, and wear a supportive band 24 hours a day until instructed otherwise. The band helps to support the healing breasts while the healing tissue encapsulates the implants. Depending upon the type of surgery, some pain is to be expected. Take any pain medications as prescribed to help reduce pain and swelling, and expect to rest for at least the first full day after surgery.

Two to Three Weeks Post Surgery

It is recommended that you don’t engage in any heavy lifting or strenuous activities, for at least a week after your breast augmentation surgery. If you have small children at home, be sure to have someone available to tend to their care for at least a few days. Exercise should be limited to walking for the first two weeks. In weeks three and four, you’ll be cleared for light exercise.

Breast Augmentation Recovery Time – Dr. Rast

Your breast augmentation recovery will take up to a full eight weeks before you’re cleared for heavy exercise (ie, weight lifting or pushups,) but some light exercise, as advised by Dr. Rast, is advisable. Wearing a good, supportive, soft sports-type bra after you’re released from wearing the band daily is the best way to support your breasts as the healing process is completed. In six to eight weeks, the swelling should subside almost entirely. It can take up to a year for the final results to appear, while the implants and tissue settle.
