Deciding whether or not to get a breast lift is an important decision. There are several factors you’ll need to consider if you’re getting a breast lift, including whether you want to get breast implants at the same time or not. The most common breast lift operation, called mastopexy, repositions the nipple higher on the chest wall.
Why Women Undergo the Knife For a Breast Lift
Most women choose to get a breast lift procedure because with age or breastfeeding, they may develop a condition called Ptosis. This is the medical term for sagging and is defined by the position of the nipple relative to the crease under the breast. You can do a very simple test to see if you have this condition. Lift up on your breast with one hand, place the pencil horizontally under the breast, right in the natural crease, and then let the breast go. If the breast holds the pencil in place, then there is some element of ptosis. If the pencil is held, note the position of the nipple. If the nipple is above the level of the pencil, then you have a “deflated” breast, called pseudoptosis. This is common in women who have breast fed and lost volume in their breasts.
Women usually get this procedure on an outpatient basis, meaning there’s no overnight stay. It takes about three hours and is usually done under general anesthesia. The operation will improve the body’s contours of patients by raising and firming the tissue of the breasts. Your doctor will remove excess skin of the breasts and tighten the surrounding breast and chest tissue to reshape and support the new breast contour. The appearance of large areolas can also be reduced. If you’d like to restore the youthful firmness and shape of your breasts, a breast lift may be right for you. This procedure is highly individualized and should be considered for your own personal reasons, not the desire of others.
