Getting a Nose Job: What Happens and How to Prepare

Getting a ‘nose job’ (or rhinoplasty) involves surgery that changes the shape of your nose and/or improves its function. There are medical reasons for choosing to get a nose job, including breathing problems associated with disfigurement of the nose. Many people, however, opt for rhinoplasty solely for cosmetic reasons if they are dissatisfied enough with their nose’s appearance. Whatever your reasons may be, here are some considerations as well as what to expect.

Making the Decision for a Nose Job

The hardest part of getting a nose job is often making the decision to go through with it. The first big step is to meet with a plastic surgeon with years of experience. It is important that the surgeon has technological know-how for plastic surgery procedures, and rave reviews from satisfied customers.

Discuss your goals, as well as what you specifically dislike about your nose/how you would like it to look. Cosmetic surgery can enhance your natural beauty by emphasizing your more flattering facial features. This will help eliminate any unrealistic expectations you may have and could offer knowledge concerning options you possibly didn’t consider. It’s also important to consider your overall health and discuss costs, risks, and recovery time with your surgeon.

Preparation and Procedure

Next, your surgeon will explain various surgical techniques that could help you get the nose you want. Remember that most insurance plans don’t cover rhinoplasty for cosmetic reasons. Follow all of your surgeon’s guidelines for preparing for the procedure carefully, and make sure you are eating and sleeping well before going in for the surgery as well as engaging in regular exercise.

A rhinoplasty usually doesn’t involve an overnight stay, but you will receive either anesthesia. This anesthesia may be general, putting you to sleep, or local, which will only sedate and numb the pain. During the operation, your surgeon will make cuts within the nostrils and, possibly, across the base of the nose. Then, he or she will reshape the inner cartilage and bone.

Recovery for Rhinoplasty

It’s common for those recovering from a nose job to wear a nasal splint for about a week. There will normally be bruising and swelling around the eyes. This typically improves after three days but can last up to two weeks. While very unnoticeable, there is typically slight, residual swelling that can last up to six months. At that point, the new appearance of your nose should be clearly apparent.

If you’re ready to discuss getting a nose job with an experienced and knowledgeable plastic surgeon, Dr. Jon E. Rast, MD and his associates would love to meet with you to discuss options for your rhinoplasty. Let us offer you guidance, support, and expertise every step of the way.

Why Plastic Surgery Is on the Rise in Kansas City

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), there were almost a quarter million more plastic surgeries performed in 2018 than in 2017. However, this isn’t breaking news, considering that cosmetic procedures have been rising over the past five years.  With body positivity and size acceptance also on the rise, why are so many more people getting plastic surgery? Experts are saying it’s because cosmetic procedures are physically, emotionally, and financially easier than many may think.

The Data

1.8 million plastic surgeries were performed in the past year, according to the ASPS, with the top five kinds of plastic surgery being:

  • Liposuction (up 5% from 2017)
  • Breast augmentation (up 4%)
  • Tummy tuck (equal to 2017)
  • Eyelid surgery (down 1%)
  • Nose reshaping (down 2%)

In addition, body-sculpting procedures also saw an increase, including buttock augmentation to improve the size, shape, or contour. Thigh lifts that reduce excess fat and skin also increased in popularity.

Finally, 15.9 million minimally-invasive procedures were done in 2018, with the most popular being:

  • Fillers (up 2% from 2017}
  • Botox (up 3%)
  • Chemical peels (up 1%)
  • Laser hair removal (down 1%)
  • Microdermabrasion (down 4%)

Why the Increase in Plastic Surgery?

With such a diverse list, it’s surprising that experts say they all have one thing in common: They are all steps to being the best person you can be. More specifically, these procedures are an integral part of the current wellness movement to be the best version of oneself. Paradoxically, plastic surgery is allowing patients to proactively become their best selves by making themselves look and feel even better with cosmetic procedures. Here are some of the reasons why.

More Screen Exposure

Due to selfies, social media platforms, and cell phones, we are seeing many more pictures of ourselves than in the past. In this way, we are able to watch the aging process unfold in front of our eyes. Second, we are seeing more and more pictures of people who have gotten cosmetic procedures from an experienced plastic surgeon and look great.

In short, as tends to be human nature, we are constantly scrutinizing ourselves and others, but to a much larger degree.

More Widely Accepted

Things have changed since plastic surgeons were allowing patients to enter through the back door, due to the fear of exposure as a result of the stigma around such procedures. Today, you may see a post by an old classmate showing them in the recovery room following one of these surgeries. In general, people are more comfortable about sharing intimately and candidly about their choice to seek plastic surgery.

More Affordable

It was only the not-so-distant past when plastic surgery was only possible for the super wealthy. Today, however, a common patient is a working class professional or stay-at-home mom who wants to regain some of his or her youthful appearance. In addition, there are lots of financing options available today for cosmetic procedures, However, most insurance plans only cover the procedures if they are due to a medical reason.

As you can see, there are many reasons to seek plastic surgery, and one of the best plastic surgeons in Kansas City, Dr. John E. Rast, is ready to help you look and feel even better! Reach out to us to see why choosing Dr. Rast is a great option for you.

Types of Breast Implants

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons estimates that there are about 313,735 breast augmentation procedures were carried out in 2017. Women have different reasons why they desire breast enhancement procedures. For instance, one may be seeking a mommy makeover while another one may prefer an attractive silhouette. Whichever your reasons, this post gives you an insight into the different types of breast implants.

Doctor holding in his hands two silicone implants.

Silicone implants are some of the best types of breast implant in the cosmetic industry today. These are FDA-approved for women who are 22 years or older. The implants are filled with a highly cohesive silicone gel that resembles the natural breast tissue. You will need to visit your plastic surgeon every once in a while to ascertain that the silicone gel is not leaking.

2.  Saline implants

The saline implant filler is made up of sterile water and salt. They cost less than saline implants and can help you achieve a high degree of chest fullness. However, saline implants are susceptible to deflating over time. In case the implant cover ruptures, the saline solution is absorbed and expelled from your body without any health risk.

3.    Textured implants

With textured implants, your breasts develop scar tissues that stick to the textured implant surface. This reduces the chances of rotation or implant migration. Textured breast implants also reduce the chances of encapsulation. However, the incision made while inserting such is usually larger compared to smooth implants.

4.  Smooth implants

As the name suggests, smooth implants have a smooth surface. This makes them quite safe as bacteria cannot nest in wrinkled folds in case of an infection.

5.  Gummy bear implants

Gummy bear or form-stable implants are called thus because they retain their shape even after the implant shell breaks. They feature a tapered top and are more projected at the bottom. Should the implant migrate, this needs to be corrected through a separate procedure.

6.  Round implants

Round implants have the same shape all over and will help you achieve a fuller look compared to gummy bear breast implants. There is a lower chance of implant migration due to the round shape or a rippling effect on the breast skin.

Choosing the type, texture, and shape of the implants is a critical part of your breast augmentation process. Dr. Rast will provide you with comprehensive information on the different types of breast implantsand their procedures. He will help you choose after assessing your body shape, height, and your chest’s width and height. His team will also guide you through the breast implant preparation process. Setting Expectations For Breast Augmentation Recovery Time

Known as one of the most popular procedures in cosmetic surgery, breast augmentation surgery can be a life changing choice for women. While this surgery can be performed on an outpatient basis, in order to achieve the best possible outcome, it is important to set expectations during each stage of the recovery phase. Depending upon the severity of the procedure and the number of available options of implant types, the recovery experience will vary. By following the instructions and recommendations provided by your surgeon and setting expectations that are realistic for your procedure, you can look forward to a positive outcome which is of utmost importance to patients.

How Long is the Recovery Time For Breast Augmentation?

There are a number of factors that will affect recovery time after breast augmentation:

  • Hormonal levels
  • Size of breasts
  • Elasticity of the skin
  • Overall physical condition
  • Stress level

Additionally, choosing a highly experienced plastic surgeon that you can trust will have a tremendous impact on the overall recovery experience. A quality surgeon will be skilled in the latest minimally evasive surgical techniques and professional judgment to properly assess a patient and perform the procedure with limited scarring and strategic suture placement.

Recovery Day One – Two

The entire breast augmentation surgery procedure is typically completed within 2 to 3 hours and is performed on an outpatient basis at our surgery center. After the surgical procedure is performed, you will be transferred to a recovery room where you will be attended by our after care recovery staff until the affects of the general anesthesia have work off.

Upon awakening and after receiving approval, you will be released to a friend or family member to be transferred to your home to continue the recovery process. It is normal to feel fatigued and drowsy with the need for sleep which we strongly encourage. For greater comfort, we highly recommend sleeping in an inclined position on your back at a 30 -40 degree angle. It is important to understand physical activity should be minimized in order to begin the process of healing.

Take care to not obstruct the thin drainage tubes designed to drain excess blood and body fluids for the first 48 hours post surgery. If necessary, take prescribed pain medication for any discomfort as needed. Base on the surgeons’ permission, you can shower, typically two days after surgery.

Recovery Weeks Two – Six

Continue to wear the provided compression bra for a total of 24 hours per day throughout the entire recovery period, avoiding pressure or impact to the chest. No driving should occur until all prescription medication has been completed. The goal is to prevent unnecessary strain being placed on the incisions.

Many patients may be able to return to work a week after their breast augmentation procedure. Stitches are typically removed between weeks 2 – 3 weeks. In some cases absorbable stitches are used. While no strenuous exercise is recommended, light exercise can occur after week three of recovery. We suggest the use of a well fitted, padded support sports bra. Please do not attempt to lift objects over your head until after week six.

It is important to remember that by following these instructions, refraining from smoking and not rushing the recovery process, you can achieve the best possible results and outcome.

Breast Lift After Weight Loss

Women who undergo weight loss, either naturally or through surgery, oftentimes notice a change in the contours of their breasts. They may sag more or even lose volume. This is because of excess skin that still exists following weight loss. It’s not uncommon for women who experience these changes to feel depression or a loss of confidence.

Breast lift surgery provides a simple solution to changing breast shape following weight loss. A lift can restore your breasts to a firmer, more youthful shape and proportion. This is done by removing excess skin, reshaping the breast tissue itself, and repositioning the areola and nipple.

Dr. Rast has performed countless breast lift and augmentation procedures. You can contact the offices to learn more or continue reading below to learn how weight gain and loss impact breast size.

Why Losing Weight Changes Your Breasts

Breasts contain a large amount of fat. When you lose weight through natural means, you can’t directly control which area of your body will see weight loss (the idea that you can, called spot reduction, is a myth that’s still commonly peddled today in magazines). So, depending on your breast size, long term weight loss can have a visible effect on your breasts, causing them to lose firmness and sag. While the fat itself has been reduced, the skin itself has not—you can observe this in any fatty part of your body as well.

How Pregnancy Changes Your Breasts

A multitude of changes occur in your breasts during pregnancy, breastfeeding, and weaning. During pregnancy itself, your body will begin preparations for breastfeeding, which can result in the breasts feeling larger as they begin milk production. Some women may actually experience growth. When you’re no longer breastfeeding your child, your breasts may change again, similar to what happens following weight loss, or they may remain the size they were during pregnancy. Regardless, the change in weight can result in stretch marks and nipple/areola displacement.

Breast Lift Procedures

There are four primary types of breast lifts used by surgeons: the crescent lift, pre-areolar (sometimes called “the donut”) lift, vertical (or “lollipop”) lift, and the inverted T (also known as “the anchor”) lift. Which one is appropriate depends on the amount of sagging the patient is experiencing, with the crescent lift being for the least and the inverted T being most. A trusted surgeon can help you determine which one will best get you the results you seek.

It’s important for all patients undergoing breast lift procedures to understand that your body will still change naturally over time, and that a breast lift will not prevent this. Though you won’t experience the same level of sagging for many, many years, aging and certain major life events (like pregnancy) can’t expedite the process.

Breast lifts are a safe way to not only reshape your appearance but to also restore confidence and self-esteem. If you’d like to learn more about how a breast lift and augmentation can help you, reach out to Dr. Rast today.

Getting a Stunning Brazilian Butt Lift

Some kinds of plastic surgery, like reconstructive operations to rebuild a body part after an accident or disease, can be considered necessities. Other types of plastic surgeries are more elective type procedures; they can make you look better, like summertime surgeries to enhance your appearance at the beach. These procedures won’t improve your overall health or function, but there’s nothing wrong with that! If you want to improve your appearance and a procedure is a good fit for you, definitely consider it. One popular procedure, especially during the summertime, is the Brazilian Butt Lift.

Fat Grafting

One such elective procedure bears the name Brazilian Butt Lift, which is a form of fat harvesting and sculpting. Fat is taken from other areas of the body like the hips, abdomen, lower back, or thighs, and is subsequently injected directly into the buttocks. This is one form of fat grafting. In ideal cases, two problems are solved at once; fat is removed from problem areas where it’s hard to lose fat and is placed into another body part to enhance its appearance. Thus, the primary purpose of this procedure is augmentation to change the shape of the buttocks. The procedure, despite being named as a “lift”, does not tighten loose skin on the buttocks or the thighs. Any loose skin must be tightened by a different procedure.

Brazilian Butt Life – a Great Summertime Surgery

The Brazilian Butt Lift is generally used to give the buttocks a more sensual and attractive shape as well as to give a more youthful appearance. The procedure is also a good alternative to implants. However, not everyone is a good candidate for a Brazilian Butt Lift. Generally, candidates must have good skin tone in the hips and buttocks, have adequate fat elsewhere for transplantation, and be able to avoid sitting on their buttocks for several weeks.

Patients who have had the procedure cannot sit or lie on their buttocks for two weeks afterwards (except for relieving themselves). Patients will also need to sleep on their sides or stomachs. After two weeks, sitting requires a pillow under the thighs, or a special seat, for up to another six weeks. Generally, after six months have passed, the appearance you have will be for life.

The Brazilian Butt Lift is a complex procedure that requires extensive experience in fat transfer procedures. The doctor must also be an artist to be able to judge and achieve an attractive result. This is an interesting combination that will not be found in all plastic surgeons. Thus, a physician specifically trained in this technique is necessary. In addition, don’t forget to find a doctor with verifiable results! You should be able to get before and after photographs of patients. The plastic surgeon should also have much demonstrable experience with the technique in his or her practice.

As with any surgical procedure, be very careful, research thoroughly, and make sure the doctors you are considering answer your questions. Then pick one of the summertime surgeries that fits your needs and contact us today!

Male Breast Reduction for Gynecomastia

While it may seem a bit unusual to the general population, women are not the only ones who can benefit from chest reduction surgery. Sometimes men also need the procedure. Being a man with noticeable breasts can be embarrassing, for example, and might even prevent someone from living a full and happy life. It can also be difficult to even go out in public or to find clothing that does not reveal your condition. And, of course, sometimes an overgrowth of breast tissue in men indicates a health issue that needs to be remedied. All of these factors make male breast reduction something to consider.

Who Opts for Male Breast Reduction?

Generally, older men who have a condition called gynecomastia, or swollen breast tissue, opt for male breast reduction. While the condition can sometimes resolve on its own, it oftentimes does not and necessitates medical intervention. Gynecomastia can develop from an imbalance of the hormones estrogen and testosterone. As a man ages, testosterone (the male hormone) production decreases, and there is less to counteract the estrogen (female hormone) that a man’s body produces. Testosterone controls muscle mass and body hair while estrogen controls (among other things) breast development.

Many kinds of medications can also cause gynecomastia, including some antibiotics, anti-androgens, anabolic steroids, some AIDS medicines, and cancer, heart, and ulcer medicines. Other kinds of drugs can contribute to the problem, including alcohol, amphetamines, methadone, and marijuana. Certain medical conditions can lead to gynecomastia, too, including tumors, hyperthyroidism, and liver or kidney failure.

While there are no real physical complications from gynecomastia besides its appearance, male breast reduction is still a consideration for many. With that said, if any contributing factors can be identified, it might be worth the time and effort to counteract them before pursuing surgery.

Breast Reduction for Men

If you need or want to have the excess fatty tissue on your chest removed, breast reduction for men is usually done via chest reduction surgery. The procedure removes excess fat, excess skin, and excess glandular tissue. The surgical procedure must be done while considering how best to shape the patient’s chest after removing the unwanted tissue. The patient’s chest must return to a masculine shape in order to match the rest of their body.

It should be noted that you don’t necessarily have to have traditional surgery to treat gynecomastia. Liposuction can also be used to correct the problem. One of liposuction’s main advantages is that the treatment usually only requires local anesthesia and side effects are generally mild enough that the patient can return to work in about three days.

Gynecomastia can create anxiety and make men highly uncomfortable about their appearance. You don’t have to suffer in silence, however, because there are good medical solutions that can help. The procedures for correcting the condition are well established, have good results, and can have a life-changing effect on a person’s life.

Tummy Tucks for the Warmer Season

The “tummy tuck”, more formally known as abdominoplasty, is a surgical procedure for removing excess fat and skin from the abdomen. The procedure can also be used to restore weakened or separated muscles in the abdominal wall. While exercise and diet can help with getting and keeping a flat abdomen, they are not always enough. Various factors contribute to a sagging or bulging abdomen, including aging, pregnancies, and dramatic and recent weight loss.  Tummy tucks on women are usually done because of either sagging skin, belly fat, or bulging abdominal muscles after pregnancy.tummy tuck

Despite a tummy tuck having been performed correctly, and the results (in principle) permanent, a positive outcome can be largely negated by certain post-operative factors, including substantial weight loss after surgery or pregnancy. A good exercise program and a sensible diet can help maintain the gains realized by the tummy tuck for women and men.

Types of Tummy Tucks

Two major types of tummy tucks are the complete tummy tuck and the partial tummy tuck (mini-abdominoplasty). With the complete tummy tuck, the surgeon makes an incision across the abdomen, spanning across the hips, while contouring muscle, skin, and other tissue. The naval’s position is usually adjusted, and a drainage tube is used for a few days. A partial tummy tuck is done on patients with extra fat below the naval. The naval’s position is usually not changed, and the procedure may only take a few hours.

Is a Tummy Tuck Right for You?

Generally, good candidates for a tummy tuck are those in good health (also refraining from smoking or drinking) with a stable weight. It will also help to have realistic expectations about the outcome, which can be addressed during consultation with the surgeon who will do the procedure. For example, realistically, a tummy tuck is meant for toning and tightening the midsection, not fat removal. For stubborn fat deposits, liposuction is often used with a tummy tuck.

Minimizing Scarring

For the best possible cosmetic result, potential scarring must be evaluated. Related to that, if the patient has scarring from a previous procedure, like a cesarean section, the possibility of combining the old scars with the abdominoplasty scars should be considered. After surgery, do not subject the incisions to excessive abrasion or motion.

Cost of a Tummy Tuck

A tummy tuck is usually considered elective surgery, which insurance companies do not cover.  An exception is when a medical condition like a hernia can be corrected with a tummy tuck; insurance may cover part of the cost. Otherwise, the procedure would be paid out of pocket by the patient. Costs include the surgeon, the facility, tests, anesthesia, and medications.

As one of the less risky surgical procedures, a tummy tuck can produce great and long-lasting results in one’s appearance, with relatively little risk.

Kybella Treatment

There is a new technique for removing the fat that causes a double chin. FDA-approved and non-invasive, this fat loss removal solution is great news for anyone who doesn’t have the time to dedicate to more traditional methods. It’s a particularly effective double chin injection too, designed to remove the fat in that area. The process consists of injecting deoxycholic acid into the fat under the chin. Deoxycholic acid is also found in bile and it dissolves the membranous linings of fat cells, causing them to expel their contents and dissolve. The fat is then reabsorbed by the body.

Kybella Treatment

Kybella treatment is a new non-invasive fat loss solution, so there are still things to be learned about it. This includes how long the results last. Some patients have reported the results sticking around for several years. Multiple treatments, typically around six, are usually required and are spread over several months. The double chin injection results in minimal “downtime” and does not require general anesthesia. Kybella is a great alternative to traditional cold steel plastic surgery or to liposuction.

Best Candidates for Kybella

The best candidates for Kybella are individuals over 18-years-old who are in good health and have already tried to reduce the fat under the chin by diet or exercise. On the other hand, the treatment is not for everyone. If you have fat and loose or baggy skin, Kybella will not correct the issue. If you are pregnant, you should not get Kybella treatments as it affects on the unborn fetus are not known. As a precaution, let the physician giving you Kybella know if you have had prior facial surgeries and what kinds of medications you are taking.

Non-Invasive Fat Loss

Downtime and side effects are generally minimal. kybella treatmentSome pain, swelling, bruising, and numbness are the usual post-treatment problems, and these disappear in a week or two. Though the treatment is usually well tolerated, serious though rare, side effects have been noted, including facial weakness, lopsided smile, difficulty swallowing, and nerve damage. Some physicians have reported results are not predictable, in that significant reduction in fat may occur with one or two treatments while other cases take five or six. Keep your timeline in mind when opting for the treatment and prepare to be patient to see the effects.

Double Chin Injection

Is a double chin a health problem? No, it’s a cosmetic issue that affects a person’s self-image and it can be an issue for individuals who are in shape as well as those on the weight-loss journey. If you are trying to lose weight, you might want to postpone your treatment until after your weight-loss journey because your double chin may recede during the process.

Kybella is a new kind of fat reduction treatment and has some advantages over older, conventional techniques like surgery and liposuction. Is it the right treatment for you? Find a physician you trust, like Dr. Rast, and ask for advice.
