What is Rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty is what most people refer to as a “nose job.” It’s usually performed for cosmetic purposes to help patients regain self-esteem, and is one of the most popular forms of plastic surgery today. However, occasionally patients require it to resolve breathing problems as a result of structural defects in the nose.
Some examples of what rhinoplasty can treat are: nose size, nose width, a nose with visible bumps or ridges on the bridge, a droopy or upturned nose tip, nostrils that are too large or narrow, and nose asymmetry. Patients should bear in mind that some asymmetry is to be expected.
Hoes Does Rhinoplasty Work?
Rhinoplasty is performed primarily using two different techniques:
1. Open technique: The open technique (or external rhinoplasty) involves making a tiny incision on the columella, which is the delicate tissue separating the nostrils. Since the open technique grants a clearer view of problem areas, this method allows the surgeon to more accurately reshape and contour the nose according to the patient’s desires. It is ideal for patients with more complex or difficult nose shapes.
2. Closed technique: In the closed technique (or endonasal rhinoplasty), incisions are made inside the nose, preventing scars from being visible. Unlike in the open technique, the closed technique does not involve making any incisions on the columella, which reduces post-surgical swelling. The absence of this additional incision also results in a slightly faster procedure.
Many are afraid of experiencing pain during rhinoplasty, but because incisions take place during each method, the patient will be sedated. Luckily, rhinoplasty is an outpatient procedure, so the patient does not need an overnight hospital stay and can return home relatively soon after the surgery is completed.
Cost of Rhinoplasty
The average cost of rhinoplasty itself is $5,125, but this does not include other medical expenses associated with surgery. Anesthesia costs typically range from $800 to $2,000. The fees for operating room facilities, prescription medication, and other medical expenses should also be taken into consideration when figuring the cost for rhinoplasty.
While it may be expensive, patients typically report high levels of satisfaction and self-esteem after undergoing rhinoplasty. If you feel your nose is reducing the overall quality of your life, don’t hesitate to call us at 913-451-3722 to schedule a consultation with Dr. Jon Rast.
