Selecting a Surgeon
Since breasts continue to develop into a woman’s early 20’s, the FDA requires that women be at least 18 years old to get breast augmentation with saline-filled implants and at least 22 years old to receive silicone implants. We recommend when picking your surgeon, you choose one with a lot of experience. Before your breast augmentation procedure, you should consult with your surgeon for a full medical screening. During this time you will want to express the goals you have for the procedure and get feedback from the doctor. You should be prepared to stop taking certain medications a few days or weeks before your surgery if your surgeon sees any potential risks.
Patients can select to get breast augmentation done as an outpatient procedure (most popular), or inpatient procedure (less popular). A breast augmentation procedure typically only takes about 90 minutes. Patients can expect to be given general anesthesia, so a patient will be asleep and limit potential pain.
Silicone or saline breast implants are surgically placed in the chest during the breast augmentation surgery. Your plastic surgeon will make a small cut under your breasts, under your arms, or around your nipples. The surgeon will put the breast implant into a pocket above or below your chest muscle. After the implant is in place, your plastic surgeon will close the cuts with sutures or surgical tape.
After surgery, patients are monitored closely and go home within a few hours. Strenuous activity is limited for about six weeks after your surgery, but patients can return to work within 5 to 7 days. Pain is minimal and easily controlled with oral pain medicine. Learn more about the surgery and post-surgical steps in our series of informational pages.
What are the Different Types of Breast Implants?
Saline Breast Implants
Saline breast implants are filled with sterile salt water. Should the implant shell leak, a saline implant will collapse and the saline will be absorbed and naturally expelled by the body. Saline breast implants provide a uniform shape, firmness and feel, and are FDA-approved for augmentation in women age 18 or older.
Silicone Breast Implants
Silicone breast implants are filled with silicone gel. The gel feels a bit more like natural breast tissue. If the implant leaks, the gel may remain within the implant shell, or may escape into the breast implant pocket. A leaking implant filled with silicone gel will not collapse. If you choose silicone implants, you may need to visit your plastic surgeon regularly to make sure the implants are functioning properly. Silicone breast implants are FDA-approved for augmentation in women age 22 or older.
Gummy Bear Breast Implants
Form-stable implants are sometimes referred to as gummy bear breast implants because they maintain their shape even when the implant shell is broken. The consistency of the silicone gel inside the implant is thicker than traditional silicone gel implants. These implants are also more firm than your traditional implants, and are widely considered to be less likely to break.
Round Breast Implants
Round breast implants make the breasts appear fuller than form-stable implants. Higher profile options can achieve even more projection. Due to the fact round implants are the same shape all over, there is less concern about them rotating out of place.
Smooth Breast Implants
Smooth breast implants usually have the softest feel. These implants can move with the breast implant pocket, which give your breast a natural movement.
Textured breast implants
Textured breast implants develop scar tissue to stick to the implant, making them less likely to move around inside of the breast and get repositioned.
It is important for you to monitor your breast implants and follow-up with your plastic surgeon for appropriate checkups, whether you choose saline or silicone implants.
