Many female patients we see at our Kansas City plastic surgery clinic are concerned with how cosmetic surgery of their body could potential harm or affect a potential pregnancy somewhere in their future. Past plastic surgery procedures will not hurt your chances of becoming pregnant or harm your child while you are pregnant.
As many women know, pregnancy causes bodies to change in major ways. These changes will affect the results of a plastic surgery procedure.
Tummy Tuck & Pregnancy
Tummy tuck surgery, also known as abdominoplasty, is a procedure performed to remove excess tissue and fat from the abdomen and tighten the muscles of the abdominal wall. While tummy tucks are usually a better option post-baby, there should be no issue with getting pregnant afterwards.
During pregnancy, the abdominal region carries most of the burden. Muscles and skin stretch, new fat pockets are formed, and many other chances are seen. A person with a tummy tuck will see the same changes to their body, and a touch up may be necessary post-birth.
Breast Implants & Breast Feeding
Many women are concerned that they will not be able to breast feed if they’ve had breast implants. There is some risk of complication, but it is important to talk to Dr. Rast about your concerns so that he can devise an augmentation plan. By avoiding disruption of the milk ducts during surgery, it increases the likelihood of breast feeding post-implants.
Pregnancy also causes changes in the breasts. Breast implants will not cause harm to the pregnancy or mother, but the shape of the breasts may change. Be sure to talk with Dr. Rast about your concerns with pregnancy and breast feeding.
Other Cosmetic Procedures
While tummy tucks and breast implants are usually the main cause of concern for women when it comes to pregnancy, pregnancy can cause changes to other types of cosmetic procedures. If you’re considering any type of plastic surgery and planning to get pregnant in the future, be sure to talk with Dr. Rast about your concerns so that he can create the best option for you.
