Look Your Best for the New Year

There are many ways in which you can look your best for the new year. Exercise, meditation, proper diet, and much more can all do wonders, but sometimes we need to do a little more to get the body of our dreams. Board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Jon E. Rast understands this and is here to provide you with a variety of surgeries and procedures to help you get your body to the place you’ve always wanted.

Whether you need a breast lift, face lift, liposuction, or something else, Dr. Rast is here for you.

How About a Breast Lift?

Dr. Rast offers a number of breast surgeries, but one of the most popular is a breast lift, or “mastopexy” as it is called in the medical world. Breast lifts do exactly what the name suggests. By lifting the breasts, the surgery helps to reduce sagginess caused by age, pregnancy, breastfeeding, and many other life events.

To accomplish this, Dr. Rast removes excess skin and tissue surrounding the breasts. As part of the procedure, the tissue is tightened in order to reshape and lift the breasts. After a short healing process, the breasts will have developed a new contour in order to increase overall firmness while adding a youthful appearance to the chest.

Maybe a Different Type of Lift

Often, it’s not the breasts which are the most problematic part of the body. As we age, the face can also succumb to sagginess, wrinkles, crow’s feet, and much worse. Other things like smoking, drinking alcohol, using other drugs, and poor diet as well as overexposure to the sun or other forms of UV lighting, such as that found in tanning beds, and air pollution can also wreak havoc on the skin and tissue of the face.

The cause of a saggy or wrinkled face, however, is less important than the fact that sagginess and wrinkles have appeared at all. Most important for most of Dr. Rast’s patients aren’t diagnosing the cause but fixing the problem. And, fortunately, a facelift can help with that.

A facelift, or “rhytidectomy, is accomplished by making small incisions beginning at the temples. The incisions continue around the ears and typically end at the lower scalp. Doing this allows the skin and tissue of the face to be lifted so that wrinkles and sagginess can be metaphorically wiped away. Sometimes, these procedures also incorporate a neck lift which involves making incisions in the chin area.

stomach liposuction

Lose Weight with Liposuction

Perhaps the problem isn’t sagginess or wrinkles at all. Sometimes, all we need is to lose a little weight. Liposuction is one procedure offered by Dr. Rast to help with this.

While exercise and diet can do wonders for the body, it is often not enough. This is especially true if you’ve inherited genetic conditions which increase the buildup of localized fat deposits throughout the body.

Liposuction requires making incisions in the body where the fat is to be removed. This can be on the neck, stomach, back, legs, thighs, or just about anywhere else. After the incisions are made, a small tube is inserted into the body. It circulates at a high speed which causes the breakdown of fat deposits. Once broken apart the tube sucks the fat away.

Can Large Breasts Cause Upper Back Pain?

Breast Augmentation

Upper back pain is experienced by many people. Women with large breasts, however, often experience back pain to a greater extent than others. Many wonder whether or not large breasts are the cause of this pain.

The answer is not as simple as it may seem because back pain can be caused by many different factors. Still, a doctor or plastic surgeon may recommend breast reduction surgery in certain instances to decrease upper back in women with large breasts.

What is Upper Back Pain?

The upper back is the part of the back from the bottom of the neck down to the bottom of the rib cage. This includes the back of the shoulder and the area behind the heart and lungs. Upper back pain within these regions can be caused by many reasons including:

  • Poor posture

  • Overuse of the muscles which can occur with too much exercise or physical labor

  • Traumatic injury to the upper back resulting from car accidents, slips, falls, or other traumas

  • Herniated disks

  • Pinched nerves

  • Osteoarthritis or other forms of arthritis in the upper back

Can Large Breasts Cause Upper Back Pain?

Large breasts are typically classified as breasts which are cup D or larger. Breasts of these sizes can cause upper back pain and increase pain caused by other factors. The reasons for this is because the size and weight of large breasts force the spine to curve unnaturally within the upper back.

This bend can contribute to poor posture, resulting in the overuse of muscles, and even lead to herniated disks or pinched nerves. Of course, this won’t happen immediately. A woman with large breasts may be safe from back pain for quite some time. However, after years of walking around with this extra weight, upper back pain may develop.

Breast Reduction

Is Breast Reduction Surgery Needed?

There many methods which can reduce upper back pain associated with large breasts. Regular stretching, wearing the right type of bra, or walking with an upright posture might all be helpful. If back pain or large breasts are becoming too much of an inconvenience, breast reduction surgery is also a choice.

Breast reduction surgery ultimately results in a smaller breast size. By removing fat, tissue, and skin within the breast, surgeons reduce the size of large breasts. This surgery is also cosmetic. Women can often choose the size of breast they want at the end of the surgery. After one surgery, breasts which may have always felt too large for the body can be sculpted to become perfectly perpendicular with the rest of the body.

Seniors and Cosmetic Surgery-What’s Right for Me?

Seniors and Cosmetic Surgery-What’s Right for Me?

The signs of aging affect us more strongly as we become seniors and cosmetic surgery can provide answers. Dr. Rast offers solutions that can help you look and feel younger. Signs of aging like wrinkles and sagging skin can reduce self-esteem in women and men over the age of 65. When signs of aging begin to show on the face, neck, and body, there are options to help you look and feel younger.

and wrinkles. If the skin around your eyes is puffy or sagging and makes you look older or chronically tired, Dr. Rast can perform the procedure on the upper eyelid, lower eyelid, or both. The incision is hidden within a natural crease, and muscles and tissue are tightened, fat deposits are repositioned, and excess skin is removed. The result is a more “awake,” open-eyed appearance that creates a more youthful look.

Breast Augmentation

As women age, breasts tend to sag and lose volume. Dr. Rast can improve the profile, fullness, size, and symmetry of a woman’s breasts with the use of implants. The surgery involves small incisions made under the breast, under your arms, or around the nipples. The implants are inserted, and the incision closed with stitches or surgical tape.

Face Lift

A face lift for a senior can help smooth out signs of aging around your face and neck. It does not alter your basic appearance, but it may help you look and feel younger. Incisions begin at the hairline and continue around the ear, ending at the lower scalp. Another incision below the chin may be necessary to remove excess skin and fat around the neck and to smooth your profile.

Common Misconceptions About Breast Augmentation and Lift

Misconceptions About Breast Augmentation and Lift

Misconceptions About Breast Augmentation and Lift - Kansas City MOThere are so many Misconceptions About Breast Augmentation and Lift in Kansas City, and if you search the web you’ll find a plethora of misinformation about the procedure. Being a plastic surgeon in Kansas City, Dr. Rast has chosen to clear the air and provide the most accurate information on the breast augmentations and lift process. Here is a list of misconceptions that should be clarified:

Misconception # 1: Breast augmentation is only for women who want bigger breasts. This misconception is far from the truth. Most women who come into our Kansas City plastic surgery office are just looking to feel better about their body, and how they fill out the upper part of their body. They are looking to appear more proportional, and not necessarily looking for oversized breasts.

Misconception # 2: Breast augmentation is painful. While pain and recovery time varies per person, what you will mostly feel during recovery is discomfort which is to be expected with any type of major surgery. Breast augmentation pain typically happens more with women who exert themselves more than they are supposed to after surgery.

Misconception # 3: People will notice that you’ve had a breast augmentation and it will look fake. This is every woman’s fear in Kansas City who are considering breast augmentation. Dr. Rast is a renowned plastic surgeon who makes sure his patient’s procedures improve their appearance with natural looking breasts. Additionally, during your consultation we will make sure to select a realistic size that will fit your proportions.

Misconception # 4: Having a breast augmentation and lift means you only need one surgery. When you combine two different procedures; one to make your breast bigger and the other that makes your breast smaller, it is difficult to get optimum results in one surgery. Depending on the goals you set for yourself and your degree of ptosis (breast sagging), we may decide that it is safer to plan separate procedures that will allow your body to recover in between surgeries.

Misconception # 5: Only one incision is needed near the areola/nipple, so you won’t have scars on your breast. Generally, plastic surgery is a tradeoff of surgery versus scars. Every patient’s breasts are different and need different incisions to obtain excellent results. Breasts that have more ptosis (breast sagging) may need more incisions to get a proper lift and shape to the breast.

If you live in Kansas City and want to learn more about the truth on breast augmentation and lift, contact our office today. Dr. Rast will provide you with all of the information you need to make an informed decision on plastic surgery.

Difference Between Silicone and Saline Breast Implants

Understanding Silicone and Saline Breast ImplantsImplants

There are a few differences between silicone and saline breast implants, and if you are considering undergoing breast augmentation surgery, you may want to consider these differences before making your final decision. Of course, all decisions, thoughts, questions and opinions should be discussed in further detail with your chosen plastic surgeon as well. An experienced plastic surgeon like Dr. Rast can properly guide you in your decesion making.

Saline Implants

Saline implants are known to be a less expensive option and they have a lower rupture rate.  Saline implant procedure tends to be less invasive and leaves minimal, if any, scarring at all. There is no worrying or guessing about ruptures with the saline option and there are far more volume (size) choices available with saline implants. Additionally, saline implants are able to be placed in younger patients. Saline breast implants are available to women 18 and older for breast augmentation and to women of any age for breast reconstruction.

Silicone Implants

Silicone implants are said to feel more natural and have a minimized risk of the rippling effectSilicone implants are pre-filled with silicone gel — a thick, sticky fluid that closely mimics the feel of human fat. Most women feel that silicone breast implants look and feel more like natural breast tissue.

Both of these implants do look and feel natural, more than they ever did in the past. Breast augmentation surgery has become quite popular and is pretty routine for surgeons these days. There are also gel implant options available now which are leaving patients quite pleased. This may come down to personal preference as well, if one was far superior than the other – that would be the only option available! These are just some considerations to think about and discuss further if you are interested.

How is Breast Augmentation Performed

Breast Augmentation What You Need to Know?

breast augmentation in kansas cityNo matter what the reasoning is for an individual to undergo a breast augmentation procedure, it is always suggested to know exactly how the procedure is performed. This will not only ease the mind of the patient, but allow for time to mentally prepare for the procedure and not get overly anxious. Breast augmentation surgery is one of the top procedures that plastic surgeons perform on a regular basis. They have become quite routine and with the utilization of our technological advances to date, recovery time has been cut down significantly.

Where Will the Incision Be?

Using the specific implants that have been chosen between you and your surgeon, the procedure can happen a few different ways. The biggest difference between procedures is where the initial incision for the implants is. This can be under the breast, under the muscle, on top of the muscle, under the armpit or through the nipple area. Again, the best option for each patient will be discussed in further detail during a consultation appointment to Dr. Rast. Every patient and surgeon is different, so talking about the procedure is critical.

Brest Augmentation Recovery Time

After the incision has been made, it creates a little pocket in which the implant will be placed. If you are receiving a fat transfer augmentation, then fat from another region of the patient’s body will be removed and injected. After the desired size has been achieved, the incision will be sutured shut and the recovery process will begin. Recovery time does vary from patient to patient, as it does make a difference in how quickly an individual heals, what type of incision was made and what type of implant was chosen.

Generally, a good estimate is about 6 to 8 weeks’ time after any invasive surgical procedure. This is a good time to assume your ‘downtime’ will be before you can resume regular activity. For additional information, contact Dr. Rast  today.

Breast Augmentation to Improve Symmetry

How Can Breast Augmentation Improve Symmetry

Symmetry

There are several reasons why people may choose to undergo breast augmentation surgery to improve symmetry . With that though, there are several questions that arise, and it is better to share information so people are informed to make the correct personal decesion. When speaking about breasts, oftentimes people can be ashamed or embarrassed about the topic.  A persons self-esteem may be low, or they may have certain emotions surrounding why they would like the breast augmentation in the first place. If you are one of these people – you are not alone!

Nobody’s Body is Perfect

Naturally, breasts are never the same exact size. While sometimes it is very difficult to notice in some patients, there are others where one breast can be a full cup size larger than the other of more. Depending on the patient, and their history  – there could be many reasons why one breast may be larger than the other. This often can leave a person to feel embarrassed about their appearance and their body.  If this is the case surgery becomes a viable option for them to consider.

Creating Symmetry

Breast augmentation surgery can definitely help improve one’s symmetrical issues. A person may just want their breasts to be even in size or want them enlarged, a plastic surgeon like Dr. Rast is a very skilled professional and can help.  As plastic surgeons are more considered artists (in a different sense) they work their hardest to produce ‘perfection.’

Some patients do notice after surgery that the breasts still may seem a little uneven, and this is normal as well. It does take time for the breasts to ‘settle’ into place and it is important to follow the after-care instructions as closely as possible. Whatever the reasoning behind wanting to undergo breast augmentation, there are several options to be discussed with the plastic surgeon. You are never obligated and should feel one hundred percent comfortable before surgery, so if you have any questions…ask away!

Choosing The Right Breast Augmentation Surgeon

Feeling comfortable is one of the most important parts of choosing a cosmetic procedure. You should feel at ease and not worry about asking any questions about a potential surgery. It’s important to do your research about a potential breast augmentation surgeon.

Ask questions about their medical training and their experience performing surgeries. Look at their before and after images and ask questions about size and shape! Also think about the communication between you and the doctor and even the staff. Were they courteous and caring?

Dr. Rast strives to make each and every one of his patients feel comfortable and confident with their cosmetic surgery experience. He specializes in breast augmentation and is proudly a 5-star rated surgeon on RealSelf.com.

Breast Implant Sizes

One of the most common questions, or rather confusion, in our Kansas City plastic surgery office is over breast implants sizes. Breast implants are not measured in bra cup sizes! Implants are actually measured in cubic centimeters or cc’s.

breast implant sizes kansas city ksBreast Implant Sizes & Measurements

Depending on how big you want to go with your breast augmentation, Dr. Rast will need to evaluate your existing skin and breast tissue. He will determine if you have enough tissue to cover the size you desire. Sometimes, if there is not enough tissue for a larger implant the edges may become visible following your surgery.

It is very important not to worry about cup size, but rather focus on your body proportions and overall cosmetic goals. A tall woman with broad shoulders and excess tissue will typically get larger implants than a petite woman, simply because of proportions. Dr. Rast will help you figure out the shape, size, and breast implant profile that will work best for your body type and cosmetic goals.
