How Often Must One Change Breast Implants?

Many believe that breast implants are supposed to last for 10 years before needing to be replaced. Unfortunately, this misinformation is not true. Patients who research breast augmentation or plastic surgery Kansas City, MO have come up with this magic number of years. This gives the false impression that all breast implants should last. Many base their information on past factual data that has been slightly skewed in translation.

The Data on Breast Implants

The FDA released a 63-page report in 2011 regarding the safety of silicone implants. Many seeking this information (but not wanting to read a lengthy document) simplified the takeaway. This resulted in a belief that all breast implants are created equal and last a certain amount of time. The real data reflected that 1 out of 5 patients getting breast augmentation need a revision procedure. In other words, 20 percent of patients need another surgery as a result of excessive scarring inside the breast(s). That also means that 80 percent of patients had no complications after 10 years. Hence, the confusion.

The Reality

The short answer is that no one knows exactly how long a patient’s breast implants will last. Some will have complications in a few years and others will never have complications at all. There are too many variables involved to determine an accurate number of years until a patient needs either revision surgery or replacement.

The more accurate answer to the question is that you don’t need to replace implants automatically every 10 years. Unless there is a problem, and you’re monitoring properly with both self- and physician exams, there’s no need to think your implants will be expiring once they’re 10 years old.

Breast Implants and Aging

Some patients choose replacement of breast implants due to the natural aging process combined with gravity. Sun damage, bodily effects of pregnancy, and breastfeeding are two other reasons a patient might choose breast implants for the effects of nature.

Leaking

All surgery comes with risk and potential complications, including a breast augmentation procedure. A relatively common issue is leaking from a ruptured implant. In the case of leaking, restorative surgery is not typically urgent or necessary. However, it is often performed for cosmetic reasons.

There are no guarantees when you have breast implants. There is a possibility that you will need one or more follow-up surgeries at some point in your life. However, that’s not a given by any means, with most patients being completely satisfied with their breast augmentation results.

Many have avoided getting breast augmentation because of misinformation. However, the truth is the vast majority of patients with implants never have complications. As with anything regarding your body, your experience will be unique. This includes when you may (but may not) need to change your breast implants.

Early diagnosis saves lives! According to the American Cancer Society, when breast cancer is detected early in the localized stage, the 5-year relative is 100%.

Self-Exam – It is extremely important for all women to perform a monthly self check.  A monthly check helps women detect any changes in their breast tissue including cancerous lumps. Learn how to perform your own check from the National Breast Cancer Foundation.

Mammogram – Yearly mammograms for women over 40 are also very important. Mammograms can detect tumors before they can even be felt in a self exam.

Family History/Genetic Testing – New genetic tests can tell women if they have certain abnormal genes that increase their likelihood of cancer. If these tests aren’t available to you, understanding your family history of breast cancer can help indicate your risk.

Healthy Habits – While you can’t simply eat right and not get cancer, there are some steps you can take to minimize your risk. First, stop smoking. Maintaining a healthy weight with regular exercise and a diet rich in fruits and vegetables is also helpful in minimizing your risk.

Breast Reconstruction Using Breast Implants

Breast reconstruction after breast cancer is an overwhelming and scary process. You’ve gone through enough with a breast cancer diagnosis and treatment. If you undergo a mastectomy, a breast reconstruction will rebuild your breast and a natural shape.

Mastectomy – a surgical operation to remove a breast

There are many options and multiple types of breast reconstruction. The two main options on how to actually reconstruct the breast is with breast implants or natural tissue. Natural tissue uses fat and tissue from other parts of the body to rebuild the breast mound. Breast implant reconstruction uses a silicone or saline implant to reconstruct the breast mound.

Breast Implant Reconstruction Options

Breast implant reconstruction is recommended for women who have very little tissue left after a mastectomy and/or radiation therapy. Depending on the treatment schedule, patients can also choose to have an immediate or delayed reconstruction. If there is no chemotherapy and radiation after the mastectomy, Dr. Rast can immediately place the implant(s) directly after the mastectomy. If a patient needs to have further cancer treatments, it is best to wait until after the therapy is complete, so that the radiation does not affect the breast implants. Breast implants can be saline or silicone.
