An eyelid lift is a procedure performed to remove excess, baggy skin around the eyes and eyelids. Patients can expect to look more awake, rested with an overall youthful appearance almost immediately. Eyelid lifts are commonly known as eyelifts or blepharoplasty.
Eyelid lifts are performed with an incision in the natural crease of the upper eyelid (seen below), and/or within the lower eyelid. Dr. Rast will remove, tighten, and place skin for the best cosmetic results possible.

Eyelid surgery, technically known as blepharoplasty, is a cosmetic, surgical procedure performed on the eyelids. The surgery is performed to reduce excess, drooping, or sagging skin around the eyes to improve symmetry of the eyes, reduce the look of aging, and reduce the look of puffiness or tiredness. Since the plastic surgeon “lifts” and reduces facial sagging, the procedure is also sometimes referred to as an “eyelid lift.” In our Kansas City plastic surgery clinic we perform blepharoplasty on the upper eyelids, lower eyes, and both together.
Before Eyelid Surgery
After Eyelid Surgery
During the eyelid surgery, an incision will be made into the natural crease of the upper eyelid. The underlying muscles and tissue are tightened, fat deposits are repositioned or removed, and excess skin is removed. If the lower eyelid is also involved, a second incision will be made lower to perform the same objectives.
After surgery, patients will typically experience swelling, bruising, irritation, and dry eye. Discomfort or pain can be controlled with pain reliever/medication, cold compression, and topical skin medications. Patients will need to someone to drive them to and from the surgery. Healing typically takes 5 to 10 days. Patients are also allowed to resume wearing contact lenses after this time.
