Getting a Nose Job: What Happens and How to Prepare

Getting a ‘nose job’ (or rhinoplasty) involves surgery that changes the shape of your nose and/or improves its function. There are medical reasons for choosing to get a nose job, including breathing problems associated with disfigurement of the nose. Many people, however, opt for rhinoplasty solely for cosmetic reasons if they are dissatisfied enough with their nose’s appearance. Whatever your reasons may be, here are some considerations as well as what to expect.

Making the Decision for a Nose Job

The hardest part of getting a nose job is often making the decision to go through with it. The first big step is to meet with a plastic surgeon with years of experience. It is important that the surgeon has technological know-how for plastic surgery procedures, and rave reviews from satisfied customers.

Discuss your goals, as well as what you specifically dislike about your nose/how you would like it to look. Cosmetic surgery can enhance your natural beauty by emphasizing your more flattering facial features. This will help eliminate any unrealistic expectations you may have and could offer knowledge concerning options you possibly didn’t consider. It’s also important to consider your overall health and discuss costs, risks, and recovery time with your surgeon.

Preparation and Procedure

Next, your surgeon will explain various surgical techniques that could help you get the nose you want. Remember that most insurance plans don’t cover rhinoplasty for cosmetic reasons. Follow all of your surgeon’s guidelines for preparing for the procedure carefully, and make sure you are eating and sleeping well before going in for the surgery as well as engaging in regular exercise.

A rhinoplasty usually doesn’t involve an overnight stay, but you will receive either anesthesia. This anesthesia may be general, putting you to sleep, or local, which will only sedate and numb the pain. During the operation, your surgeon will make cuts within the nostrils and, possibly, across the base of the nose. Then, he or she will reshape the inner cartilage and bone.

Recovery for Rhinoplasty

It’s common for those recovering from a nose job to wear a nasal splint for about a week. There will normally be bruising and swelling around the eyes. This typically improves after three days but can last up to two weeks. While very unnoticeable, there is typically slight, residual swelling that can last up to six months. At that point, the new appearance of your nose should be clearly apparent.

If you’re ready to discuss getting a nose job with an experienced and knowledgeable plastic surgeon, Dr. Jon E. Rast, MD and his associates would love to meet with you to discuss options for your rhinoplasty. Let us offer you guidance, support, and expertise every step of the way.

Why Plastic Surgery Is on the Rise in Kansas City

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), there were almost a quarter million more plastic surgeries performed in 2018 than in 2017. However, this isn’t breaking news, considering that cosmetic procedures have been rising over the past five years.  With body positivity and size acceptance also on the rise, why are so many more people getting plastic surgery? Experts are saying it’s because cosmetic procedures are physically, emotionally, and financially easier than many may think.

The Data

1.8 million plastic surgeries were performed in the past year, according to the ASPS, with the top five kinds of plastic surgery being:

  • Liposuction (up 5% from 2017)
  • Breast augmentation (up 4%)
  • Tummy tuck (equal to 2017)
  • Eyelid surgery (down 1%)
  • Nose reshaping (down 2%)

In addition, body-sculpting procedures also saw an increase, including buttock augmentation to improve the size, shape, or contour. Thigh lifts that reduce excess fat and skin also increased in popularity.

Finally, 15.9 million minimally-invasive procedures were done in 2018, with the most popular being:

  • Fillers (up 2% from 2017}
  • Botox (up 3%)
  • Chemical peels (up 1%)
  • Laser hair removal (down 1%)
  • Microdermabrasion (down 4%)

Why the Increase in Plastic Surgery?

With such a diverse list, it’s surprising that experts say they all have one thing in common: They are all steps to being the best person you can be. More specifically, these procedures are an integral part of the current wellness movement to be the best version of oneself. Paradoxically, plastic surgery is allowing patients to proactively become their best selves by making themselves look and feel even better with cosmetic procedures. Here are some of the reasons why.

More Screen Exposure

Due to selfies, social media platforms, and cell phones, we are seeing many more pictures of ourselves than in the past. In this way, we are able to watch the aging process unfold in front of our eyes. Second, we are seeing more and more pictures of people who have gotten cosmetic procedures from an experienced plastic surgeon and look great.

In short, as tends to be human nature, we are constantly scrutinizing ourselves and others, but to a much larger degree.

More Widely Accepted

Things have changed since plastic surgeons were allowing patients to enter through the back door, due to the fear of exposure as a result of the stigma around such procedures. Today, you may see a post by an old classmate showing them in the recovery room following one of these surgeries. In general, people are more comfortable about sharing intimately and candidly about their choice to seek plastic surgery.

More Affordable

It was only the not-so-distant past when plastic surgery was only possible for the super wealthy. Today, however, a common patient is a working class professional or stay-at-home mom who wants to regain some of his or her youthful appearance. In addition, there are lots of financing options available today for cosmetic procedures, However, most insurance plans only cover the procedures if they are due to a medical reason.

As you can see, there are many reasons to seek plastic surgery, and one of the best plastic surgeons in Kansas City, Dr. John E. Rast, is ready to help you look and feel even better! Reach out to us to see why choosing Dr. Rast is a great option for you.

Alcohol after Plastic Surgery: What You Need to Know – Kansas City, MO

Alcohol after Plastic Surgery

In general, it really isn’t a good idea to drink alcohol after your plastic surgery. Not only could it interfere with proper healing and minimal scarring after a procedure, it can also affect your body by: Alcohol after Plastic Surgery

  1. Increasing swelling. When you drink alcohol, your blood vessels dilate, which in turn causes your body to swell. Alcohol is also incredibly dehydrating, which makes your body work harder to hold onto water. If you had a rhinoplasty, you will want to be especially careful not to drink alcohol because your nose is most susceptible to swelling.
  2. Increasing bleeding. Alcohol is known for thinning the blood, so if you have just come from plastic surgery, you could be at greater risk for bleeding and prolonged recovery.
  3. Causing pain. If you pair alcohol with pain medications for your surgery, you may find that the medications aren’t working as well or last as long as they should.
  4. Making your medications dangerous. Not only can alcohol cause your medications to lose their pain-relieving effect, it can also interact with certain medications to produce very harmful side effects. These include nausea, vomiting, headaches, drowsiness, fainting, loss of coordination, and even more dangerous side effects such as internal bleeding, heart problems, and difficulty breathing.
  5. Drying out your skin. When you drink alcohol, your kidneys have to work harder than they normally would and end up producing four more ounces of water than when you aren’t drinking alcohol. In turn, your body flushes more water, which makes you dehydrated, but also dries out your skin.

Dr. Rast will work hard to ensure your procedure goes well and gives you the results you want. Because of this, it is recommended to not drink any alcohol for at least 2 weeks before and after your procedure.

Seniors and Cosmetic Surgery | Kansas City, MO

Seniors and Cosmetic SurgerySeniors and Cosmetic Surgery

As you reach the golden age of seniors, you have probably started to notice signs of aging around your face, neck, and body. Wrinkles, sagging skin, and other signs of aging can reduce self-esteem in women and men over the age of 65. Luckily, Dr. Rast in Kansas City offers solutions to get you looking and feeling younger.

Face Lifts

Face lifts in seniors, more formally known as rhytidectomies, improve and smooth out signs of aging around your face and neck. This procedure does not alter your basic appearance, but involves incisions beginning at your hairline, continuing around your ear, and ending at your lower scalp. Another incision under your chin may be necessary to improve the skin around your neck. By the end of the procedure, unnecessary and excess skin and fat will have been removed by Dr. Rast, and you will be able to enjoy a smoother, younger-looking face.

Eyelid Surgery

Blepharoplasty, another word for eyelid surgery, is a procedure that focuses on aging signs around the eyelids to reduce drooping skin. If the skin around your eyes is puffy or makes you look older or consistently tired, eyelid surgery might be the right procedure for you. Dr. Rast can perform this procedure on your upper eyelid, lower eyelid, or both at his office in Kansas City. For both procedures, an incision is made within a natural crease, muscles and tissue are tightened, fat deposits are repositioned, and excess skin is removed.

Kybella Treatment

The Kybella Treatment in seniors is a non-surgical procedure that eliminates facial fat and sculpts your face. With old age sometimes comes the dreaded “double chin.” This treatment involves an injection of a naturally occurring acid into the fat under your chin that destroys the fat by absorbing it.

Breast Augmentation

As women become seniors, their breasts tend to sag and look less and less like what they used to. With breast augmentation, Dr. Rast can enhance the size, fullness, and symmetry of a woman’s breasts using implants. The surgery involves your plastic surgeon making incisions under your breasts, under your arms, or around your nipples. They will then insert the implants and after it is in place, close the cuts with sutures or surgical tape.

4 Top Questions For People Considering A Tummy Tuck

Tummy tuck surgery is a common procedure performed by Dr. Rast in our Kansas City plastic surgery clinic. Tummy tucks remove fat, improve body contours, eliminate sagging/loose skin, and re-firm weakened abdominal muscles. If you’re considering a tummy tuck, read through the following frequently asked questions we often hear at initial consultations.

Am I A Good Tummy Tuck Candidate?

We recommend that all tummy tuck patients are nonsmokers and in generally good health. Patients should be moderately fit and have some overall muscle tone. Abdominoplasty is for the removal of loose/sagging skin and improving weakened abdominal muscles along with fat removal. If fat removal is your only goal – we typically recommend liposuction.

Note that if you are considering getting pregnant in the future, your tummy tuck should be postponed until after.

How Long Is Recovery?

Following all of Dr. Rast’s instructions is essential to your recovery.  Avoiding bending, straining, or lifting anything for several days is also extremely important. Normal activity can be resumed within a few days of surgery, although there will be discomfort. Initial wound healing will take up to ten days. If no heavy lifting or vigorous activity is needed, our patients can return to work within a few weeks.

What Can I Expect Long-Term?

Abdominoplasty scars will be permanent and it may take over a year for the incision lines to fade and improve. Fortunately, normal clothing and even swimsuits should effectively conceal your scars.

Will My Tummy Tuck Last Forever?

As long as your fitness and weight is maintained, your improved body contours should continue to last. Loss of firmness is natural with aging but it should be minimal.
