How Often Must One Change Breast Implants?

Many believe that breast implants are supposed to last for 10 years before needing to be replaced. Unfortunately, this misinformation is not true. Patients who research breast augmentation or plastic surgery Kansas City, MO have come up with this magic number of years. This gives the false impression that all breast implants should last. Many base their information on past factual data that has been slightly skewed in translation.

The Data on Breast Implants

The FDA released a 63-page report in 2011 regarding the safety of silicone implants. Many seeking this information (but not wanting to read a lengthy document) simplified the takeaway. This resulted in a belief that all breast implants are created equal and last a certain amount of time. The real data reflected that 1 out of 5 patients getting breast augmentation need a revision procedure. In other words, 20 percent of patients need another surgery as a result of excessive scarring inside the breast(s). That also means that 80 percent of patients had no complications after 10 years. Hence, the confusion.

The Reality

The short answer is that no one knows exactly how long a patient’s breast implants will last. Some will have complications in a few years and others will never have complications at all. There are too many variables involved to determine an accurate number of years until a patient needs either revision surgery or replacement.

The more accurate answer to the question is that you don’t need to replace implants automatically every 10 years. Unless there is a problem, and you’re monitoring properly with both self- and physician exams, there’s no need to think your implants will be expiring once they’re 10 years old.

Breast Implants and Aging

Some patients choose replacement of breast implants due to the natural aging process combined with gravity. Sun damage, bodily effects of pregnancy, and breastfeeding are two other reasons a patient might choose breast implants for the effects of nature.

Leaking

All surgery comes with risk and potential complications, including a breast augmentation procedure. A relatively common issue is leaking from a ruptured implant. In the case of leaking, restorative surgery is not typically urgent or necessary. However, it is often performed for cosmetic reasons.

There are no guarantees when you have breast implants. There is a possibility that you will need one or more follow-up surgeries at some point in your life. However, that’s not a given by any means, with most patients being completely satisfied with their breast augmentation results.

Many have avoided getting breast augmentation because of misinformation. However, the truth is the vast majority of patients with implants never have complications. As with anything regarding your body, your experience will be unique. This includes when you may (but may not) need to change your breast implants.

If you’re considering breast augmentation, contact Dr. Rast’s office to set up a consultation and get the facts and the mysteries straight.

Getting a Nose Job: What Happens and How to Prepare

Getting a ‘nose job’ (or rhinoplasty) involves surgery that changes the shape of your nose and/or improves its function. There are medical reasons for choosing to get a nose job, including breathing problems associated with disfigurement of the nose. Many people, however, opt for rhinoplasty solely for cosmetic reasons if they are dissatisfied enough with their nose’s appearance. Whatever your reasons may be, here are some considerations as well as what to expect.

Making the Decision for a Nose Job

The hardest part of getting a nose job is often making the decision to go through with it. The first big step is to meet with a plastic surgeon with years of experience. It is important that the surgeon has technological know-how for plastic surgery procedures, and rave reviews from satisfied customers.

Discuss your goals, as well as what you specifically dislike about your nose/how you would like it to look. Cosmetic surgery can enhance your natural beauty by emphasizing your more flattering facial features. This will help eliminate any unrealistic expectations you may have and could offer knowledge concerning options you possibly didn’t consider. It’s also important to consider your overall health and discuss costs, risks, and recovery time with your surgeon.

Preparation and Procedure

Next, your surgeon will explain various surgical techniques that could help you get the nose you want. Remember that most insurance plans don’t cover rhinoplasty for cosmetic reasons. Follow all of your surgeon’s guidelines for preparing for the procedure carefully, and make sure you are eating and sleeping well before going in for the surgery as well as engaging in regular exercise.

A rhinoplasty usually doesn’t involve an overnight stay, but you will receive either anesthesia. This anesthesia may be general, putting you to sleep, or local, which will only sedate and numb the pain. During the operation, your surgeon will make cuts within the nostrils and, possibly, across the base of the nose. Then, he or she will reshape the inner cartilage and bone.

Recovery for Rhinoplasty

It’s common for those recovering from a nose job to wear a nasal splint for about a week. There will normally be bruising and swelling around the eyes. This typically improves after three days but can last up to two weeks. While very unnoticeable, there is typically slight, residual swelling that can last up to six months. At that point, the new appearance of your nose should be clearly apparent.

If you’re ready to discuss getting a nose job with an experienced and knowledgeable plastic surgeon, Dr. Jon E. Rast, MD and his associates would love to meet with you to discuss options for your rhinoplasty. Let us offer you guidance, support, and expertise every step of the way.

Why Plastic Surgery Is on the Rise in Kansas City

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), there were almost a quarter million more plastic surgeries performed in 2018 than in 2017. However, this isn’t breaking news, considering that cosmetic procedures have been rising over the past five years.  With body positivity and size acceptance also on the rise, why are so many more people getting plastic surgery? Experts are saying it’s because cosmetic procedures are physically, emotionally, and financially easier than many may think.

The Data

1.8 million plastic surgeries were performed in the past year, according to the ASPS, with the top five kinds of plastic surgery being:

  • Liposuction (up 5% from 2017)
  • Breast augmentation (up 4%)
  • Tummy tuck (equal to 2017)
  • Eyelid surgery (down 1%)
  • Nose reshaping (down 2%)

In addition, body-sculpting procedures also saw an increase, including buttock augmentation to improve the size, shape, or contour. Thigh lifts that reduce excess fat and skin also increased in popularity.

Finally, 15.9 million minimally-invasive procedures were done in 2018, with the most popular being:

  • Fillers (up 2% from 2017}
  • Botox (up 3%)
  • Chemical peels (up 1%)
  • Laser hair removal (down 1%)
  • Microdermabrasion (down 4%)

Why the Increase in Plastic Surgery?

With such a diverse list, it’s surprising that experts say they all have one thing in common: They are all steps to being the best person you can be. More specifically, these procedures are an integral part of the current wellness movement to be the best version of oneself. Paradoxically, plastic surgery is allowing patients to proactively become their best selves by making themselves look and feel even better with cosmetic procedures. Here are some of the reasons why.

More Screen Exposure

Due to selfies, social media platforms, and cell phones, we are seeing many more pictures of ourselves than in the past. In this way, we are able to watch the aging process unfold in front of our eyes. Second, we are seeing more and more pictures of people who have gotten cosmetic procedures from an experienced plastic surgeon and look great.

In short, as tends to be human nature, we are constantly scrutinizing ourselves and others, but to a much larger degree.

More Widely Accepted

Things have changed since plastic surgeons were allowing patients to enter through the back door, due to the fear of exposure as a result of the stigma around such procedures. Today, you may see a post by an old classmate showing them in the recovery room following one of these surgeries. In general, people are more comfortable about sharing intimately and candidly about their choice to seek plastic surgery.

More Affordable

It was only the not-so-distant past when plastic surgery was only possible for the super wealthy. Today, however, a common patient is a working class professional or stay-at-home mom who wants to regain some of his or her youthful appearance. In addition, there are lots of financing options available today for cosmetic procedures, However, most insurance plans only cover the procedures if they are due to a medical reason.

As you can see, there are many reasons to seek plastic surgery, and one of the best plastic surgeons in Kansas City, Dr. John E. Rast, is ready to help you look and feel even better! Reach out to us to see why choosing Dr. Rast is a great option for you.

Types of Breast Implants

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons estimates that there are about 313,735 breast augmentation procedures were carried out in 2017. Women have different reasons why they desire breast enhancement procedures. For instance, one may be seeking a mommy makeover while another one may prefer an attractive silhouette. Whichever your reasons, this post gives you an insight into the different types of breast implants.

Silicone implants are some of the best types of breast implant in the cosmetic industry today. These are FDA-approved for women who are 22 years or older. The implants are filled with a highly cohesive silicone gel that resembles the natural breast tissue. You will need to visit your plastic surgeon every once in a while to ascertain that the silicone gel is not leaking.

2.  Saline implants

The saline implant filler is made up of sterile water and salt. They cost less than saline implants and can help you achieve a high degree of chest fullness. However, saline implants are susceptible to deflating over time. In case the implant cover ruptures, the saline solution is absorbed and expelled from your body without any health risk.

3.    Textured implants

With textured implants, your breasts develop scar tissues that stick to the textured implant surface. This reduces the chances of rotation or implant migration. Textured breast implants also reduce the chances of encapsulation. However, the incision made while inserting such is usually larger compared to smooth implants.

4.  Smooth implants

As the name suggests, smooth implants have a smooth surface. This makes them quite safe as bacteria cannot nest in wrinkled folds in case of an infection.

5.  Gummy bear implants

Gummy bear or form-stable implants are called thus because they retain their shape even after the implant shell breaks. They feature a tapered top and are more projected at the bottom. Should the implant migrate, this needs to be corrected through a separate procedure.

6.  Round implants

Round implants have the same shape all over and will help you achieve a fuller look compared to gummy bear breast implants. There is a lower chance of implant migration due to the round shape or a rippling effect on the breast skin.

Choosing the type, texture, and shape of the implants is a critical part of your breast augmentation process. Dr. Rast will provide you with comprehensive information on the different types of breast implantsand their procedures. He will help you choose after assessing your body shape, height, and your chest’s width and height. His team will also guide you through the breast implant preparation process. As we age, the skin loses elasticity and the body’s production of collagen begins to decrease, leaving skin looking hollow, saggy, and even wrinkling. A face lift corrects these issues and may be paired with other treatments to achieve a pleasing final result.

Mini Face Lift

A so-called “mini” face lift involves using minimal incisions to achieve the results that usually require a full face lift. A mini face lift can be performed with local anesthetic, avoiding the need for general anesthesia. The cheeks, neck, jowls, and forehead may be adjusted with a mini face lift, making it an effective and efficient procedure for many patients. Since it has a shortened downtime, it is convenient for most patients.

Lower Face Lift and Mid Face Lift

Lower and mid face lifts address specific areas of the face. With a lower face lift, sagging neck tissue is addressed. It can be tightened, lifted and smoothed to create a more pleasing profile. The mid-face lift addresses the cheeks, jowls, and upper lip area, reducing wrinkles and sagging. No matter which type of face lift you opt for, it will be customized to suit your specific concerns and meet your goals.

Face Lift Cost

The Places You Can Get Liposuction

The Places You Can Get Liposuction

Although a public perception of liposuction is often inaccurate, it can be an extremely effective treatment for removing stubborn pockets of fat left behind when diet and a fitness routine are being followed. These fat pockets stick around for a variety of genetic and other reasons, but they can spoil the proportion that you’ve worked so hard to earn.

“Flabby” Arms

Arm liposuction addresses hanging or bulging bits of fat that may cling to the upper arms. stomach liposuctionThe procedure may be accompanied by a second treatment to remove excess and sagging skin and tissue, tightening and toning the upper arms and improving the overall profile.

Facial Liposuction

One of most common areas for trouble spots for patients who have recently lost a great deal of weight is the face and neck. Chin liposuction can help reduce the look of a “double” chin and provide a smoother, more pleasing profile, while neck liposuction can smooth and tighten the skin over the neck for a more youthful appearance.

Stomach and Thighs

Whether stubborn pockets of fat are staying around after a drastic weight loss, or you’ve gone through a pregnancy, the stomach and thighs are often known as “problem” areas for weight loss. A baby pouch or fatty pockets may persist even with a targeted fitness and exercise routine. Stomach liposuction can reduce or remove the appearance of a “pouch” following child birth. Depending on your goals and overall body size and shape, your doctor may recommend an abdominoplasty instead. The thighs are another area where fat tends to accumulate. Thigh liposuction can help smooth and reduce bulges, creating a smoother, more pleasing profile that is in better proportion with your overall look and size. Contact Dr. Rast today to discuss the options available to you and to begin creating a treatment plan that will help your reach your ultimate goals.

Brow Lift Advantages

Brow Lift Advantages

As we age, the muscles and skin of the forehead tend to stretch and sag, and may begin to cause a permanent “sour” look to the expression. A brow lift can rejuvenate and revive a normal happy expression, making you look younger, happier, and more comfortable. Sagging brows can even hide the eyes. An eyebrow lift improves your overall ability to accurately convey facial expressions, which are highly dependent on the eyes and brows.

Improve Facial Expression Recognition

Our eyebrows are a subtle part of the expressions most of us make every single day, both unintentionally and purposefully. Prior to a brow lift, a patient with a sagging brow may appear sour, angry, sad, or depressed. A brow lift can restore some elasticity to the upper facial area, making expressions clearer and more open and inviting.

Remove Facial Creases

One of the most telling signs of aging is a sagging, wrinkled appearance to the skin. As we age, we produce less collagen, the material that plumps our skin, giving it a smooth,  youthful look. A brow lift removes some of the excess tissue and skin, reviving a more youthful appearance and providing a rejuvenated, revitalized look.

Open the Eyes

A sagging brow can actually interfere with vision as the eyelids and brows sag and cover the line of vision.Brow Lift A brow lift can revise this area, opening the eyes up and improving not only the appearance but the ability to see clearly as well. If you’re having problems with vision due to sagging eyelids and brows, a brow lift may be the answer, along with another procedure that addresses the eyelids themselves.

Dramatic Results

Although there are a number of less-invasive treatments available, such as Botox and dermal fillers, nothing compares to a brow lift in terms of the extent and longevity of the results. If you have found that other procedures simply aren’t giving you the results you hoped for, a brow lift may be something to consider. Talk to Dr. Rast today about your goals and whether a brow lift is the right procedure for you.

What Are Some Common Breast Augmentation Misconceptions?- Kansas City, MO

As with a lot of plastic surgery procedures, breast augmentation surgery can have some misconceptions. It’s important to clear up these misconceptions before you make a decision about whether or not a breast augmentation is a good choice for you.

breast augmentation kansas city

Here Are Some Common Breast Augmentation Misconceptions

  • Myth: Bigger is better when it comes to breast implants.
  • Fact: Larger implants come with higher complication rates, most commonly, mal-position of the implant out to the side or below the fold underneath the breast, or excessive thinning of the tissues leading to visible rippling. These problems can result in the need for costly and time consuming additional surgeries.
  • Myth: Breast augmentation is only for young women.
  • Fact: According to the statistics published by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons, women over forty years of age comprise over a third of breast augmentation patients. As long as the patient is healthy, there is no specific chronological age limit that applies to this procedure.
  • Myth: Implants need to be replaced every ten years.
  • Fact: While older generation silicone gel breast implants had poor durability and generally were found to be leaking by ten years, current silicone gel implants are very durable and only ten percent are in need of replacement at the ten-year mark. This is generally diagnosed with a high-definition ultrasound or less commonly with an MRI. Saline implants do not need to be replaced unless a deflation occurs which is obvious to patient and surgeon alike. Saline implants deflate at about one percent per year of placement, so there is a ten percent chance of deflation at ten years.
  • Myth: Insertion site for the implant doesn’t matter.
  • Fact: Current data supports that implants placed through the armpit or nipple come with higher complication rates as compared to insertion in the crease underneath the breast. Scar tissue around the implants called capsular contracture and implant mal-position are both more common with armpit or nipple placement.
  • Myth: Active women should not have breast implants.
  • Fact: Active women have no greater issues with breast implants than sedentary women. It is vitally important that appropriately sized implants are used and that they be placed under the chest wall muscle so that they have good soft tissue coverage and adequate support.
